On 1 July 2024, Australia prohibited the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs. It was a world first, and it followed years of evidence that stonemasons cutting the material were developing silicosis, an irreversible lung disease, at rates that alarmed regulators.
Two years on, the industry has largely adjusted. Homeowners have not. We still meet people at the start of a kitchen renovation who assume the ban stopped them having the benchtop they had in mind, or who have been told something vague by a supplier and are not sure what to believe.
Here is what actually changed, and what it means when you come to choose.
What the ban covers, and what it does not
The prohibition applies to engineered stone containing crystalline silica. It does not apply to natural stone, porcelain, laminate, timber, stainless steel or solid surface materials, none of which were affected. Nor does it mean an existing engineered stone benchtop in your home has to be removed. If it is installed and undamaged, it is inert and it stays.
The risk was never to the person cooking in the kitchen. It was to the tradesperson cutting and polishing the slab, who was breathing in fine crystalline silica dust. That is why the response targeted manufacture and installation rather than ownership.
What has taken its place
The category did not disappear, it reformulated. Silica-free engineered stone is now widely available and behaves much like the product it replaced: consistent colour across a whole kitchen, easy to clean, and forgiving of the things natural stone is not, such as kneading dough directly on the surface. Its weak point is the same as before, which is that edges chip if something heavy lands on them.
Alongside it, two materials have become far more prominent. Large-format porcelain is thin, extremely hard, and handles heat and staining better than almost anything else, though it can shatter if a heavy object strikes a corner. Sintered stone is made by compressing natural minerals under heat and pressure without resins, which is why it contains no crystalline silica at all, and it performs strongly across every measure except impact. Natural stone, meanwhile, has quietly benefited. Marble and granite were never affected by the ban, and for anyone who wanted the real thing rather than a manufactured imitation, the comparison has become easier to make.
What to ask before you commit
Ask your supplier to confirm in writing that the product is silica-free, not simply low-silica. The distinction matters and reputable suppliers will provide it without hesitation.
Then ask how the material behaves in the kitchen you actually have, rather than in general. A household that cooks every night and puts hot pans down without thinking has different priorities to one that wants a pristine island in a room used mostly for entertaining. Every material trades one strength for another, and there is no single winner. Finally, ask who is cutting it. The ban addressed a workplace safety failure, and the businesses that took it seriously were mostly those already managing dust properly. It is a fair question to put to anyone quoting in your kitchen.
The practical upshot
If you had your heart set on a particular engineered stone colour from a 2023 brochure, you may not be able to have precisely that. In almost every other respect the choice available to Australian homeowners is broader and better than it was, and the material that caused the problem has been replaced by products that do the same job without the cost to the people making them.
That is an unusual outcome for a regulatory intervention, and worth knowing before you walk into a showroom expecting bad news.
