TPS is calculated by dividing the maximum number of transactions a block can contain by the average block time in seconds. For example, if a blockchain produces a block every 10 seconds and each block can hold 500 transactions, its theoretical TPS would be 50.

However, theoretical TPS and sustained real-world TPS are often very different. Networks can achieve high peak TPS during ideal conditions but struggle to maintain those levels when the network is under load or when validators face hardware limitations.

Bitcoin processes approximately 7 TPS under normal conditions due to its 1 MB block size and 10-minute block time. Ethereum processes around 15 TPS on its main layer. Newer blockchains like Solana claim much higher numbers, sometimes in the thousands, but these figures come with important trade-offs in decentralization and reliability.

The blockchain trilemma states that a network can only fully optimize two out of three properties: security, decentralization, and scalability (speed). Increasing TPS usually requires compromises in one of the other areas.
