Alright, so today was meant to be my “do Singapore on a shoestring” day, and honestly, it delivered way more than I expected, cracked phone screen included. Here’s how my budget day in Singapore actually went down.

7:30am – Breakfast Sorted for Under $5

Started early at a hawker centre near my hostel, kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs, and a coffee for something like $4.50 total. Genuinely can’t complain about that as a start to the day. Singapore gets a reputation for being expensive, but the hawker food scene alone makes this a country you can travel through without blowing your budget, if you know where to eat. Iykyk 😉

9:00am – Free Stuff First: Merlion Park and the Marina

11:00am – Chinatown for Lunch

Hit Chinatown Complex for lunch, one of the best hawker centres in the whole city if you ask me. Got a proper plate of chicken rice for about $5, sat outside, and just people-watched for a bit. This is honestly the move if you’re trying to eat well without spending real money.

1:00pm – The Screen Crack Moment

Here’s where the day took a turn. I’d been stuffing my phone into my daypack all morning without much care, and somewhere between Chinatown and the MRT station, it must’ve knocked against something hard enough to crack the screen. Didn’t even notice until I pulled it out to check the map and saw the spiderweb crack across the corner.

Not exactly what you want happening mid-trip. Screen still worked fine despite the crack though, so I just kept going.

3:30pm – Chasing Down a Food Court Someone Recommended

A guy at my hostel had raved about one of the food courts near HarbourFront the night before, something about a laksa stall worth the trip, so I made my way over to VivoCity to track it down. Spent a good while wandering the mall trying to find the right level, air conditioning was a welcome break from the heat by that point anyway.

On the way, I walked past a small shopfront called Mister Mobile HarbourFront and remembered the crack on my screen, figured I was already there, so I popped in and asked if they could take a look. Turned out to be quicker than I expected, they had it sorted while I would’ve otherwise just been wandering around looking for that food court anyway. While I was at it, I mentioned my battery had been draining fast all trip, and they let me know there’s a promo running for tourists right now, phone battery replacement from $38 with a free waterproof phone bag included. Wasn’t expecting a freebie tacked onto an already cheap fix, but I wasn’t about to say no.

Eventually found the food court, laksa lived up to the hype, and I sat there for a bit just relieved to have a working phone again.

4:30pm – Back on Track at VivoCity’s Sky Park

Since I was already there, I swung by the rooftop Sky Park for a bit, free entry, decent views across toward Sentosa, and a good spot to just sit and decompress after the whole phone drama.

5:30pm – Sentosa Boardwalk, Because Why Not

I walked the free Sentosa Boardwalk over to the island, just to see the beach and catch the sunset. Didn’t spend a cent getting there, and the walk itself was honestly one of the better parts of the day.

7:30pm – Dinner Back in Chinatown

Ended the night back near Chinatown, grabbing another cheap, ridiculously good hawker meal before heading back to the hostel.

Total Damage for the Day

Food, transport, and the phone repair combined still came in well under what I’d budgeted, and I walked away with a working phone, a full battery, and a free waterproof bag I definitely wasn’t expecting when I woke up this morning. Not a bad trade for an afternoon detour.

If there’s one takeaway from today: Singapore is genuinely doable on a budget if you lean into the hawker centres and free attractions, and phone dramas mid-trip aren’t nearly the disaster they feel like in the moment.
