Walking into an Indian restaurant with an unfamiliar menu can feel overwhelming. There are usually dozens of dishes across multiple categories, not all of which are clearly explained, and the stakes of ordering poorly — especially in a group — feel unpleasantly high.

This guide is intended to take the anxiety out of that process. Whether you are a first-time visitor to Indian cuisine or someone returning after a long gap, understanding the structure of an Indian restaurant menu will help you eat significantly better.

The Architecture of an Indian Menu

Most Indian restaurant menus follow a broadly similar structure:

  • Starters / Appetisers — Typically grilled, fried, or tandoor-cooked items, designed to be shared.
  • Soups and Shorba — Often overlooked but worth considering, especially in colder months.
  • Signature Mains / Curries — The heart of the menu. Served with bread or rice.
  • Biryani and Rice — Often listed separately because biryani is considered a complete meal in itself.
  • Breads — Naan, roti, paratha, kulcha. Each has a different texture and use.
  • Desserts — Traditionally milk-based; look for regional options beyond the standard gulab jamun.
  • Drinks — Ranging from lassi and fresh juices to mocktails and, in licensed venues, cocktails.

How to Build a Meal Properly

The most common mistake when ordering Indian food is going too heavy too early. Starters in Indian restaurants are generous, and many people arrive hungry and order too many. By the time the mains arrive, nobody is in the right state to appreciate them.

A sensible approach for a table of two or three: choose two starters to share, one main each, one bread per person, and one biryani for the table if biryani is a focus. This structure leaves room for dessert without anyone feeling like they have over-committed.

For a larger group of five or six, the mains become the centrepiece. Three or four curries shared across the table, two or three orders of bread, and one or two biryanis allow everyone to taste a range without needing to repeat.

Exploring What a Well-Structured Menu Looks Like

A well-structured contemporary Indian menu balances tradition with creative interpretation. Exploring the antera menu reveals a clear layout: Starters, Signature Mains, Biryani and Rice, Desserts, and Drinks — each section purposefully ordered.

From the Starters section, the Tangdi Kebab (Rs. 420) is the standout — marinated chicken drumsticks slow-cooked in a tandoor, served with mint chutney. The Paya Shorba (Rs. 320) is a traditional Hyderabadi lamb trotter broth, particularly good on cooler evenings.

From the Signature Mains, the Nalgonda Mutton Fry (Rs. 520) reflects a specifically Telangana regional style — slow-cooked, fiery, and intensely flavoured. The Dal Makhani (Rs. 320) is the vegetarian anchor of the mains section, with black lentils simmered overnight.

From the Biryani section, the Chicken Dum Biryani (Rs. 380) and the Nalli Gosht Ki Biryani (Rs. 520) are the primary draws. If ordering for one, the Chicken Dum is a complete and satisfying meal. If ordering for two or three to share alongside curries, the Nalli Gosht — bone-in lamb shank, saffron rice, caramelised onions — is the better choice for flavour depth.

From Desserts, the Junnu Caramel (Rs. 220) — a traditional Telangana milk pudding with a contemporary glaze — and the Chocolate Indulgence (Rs. 280) with cardamom ice cream are both worth ordering.

How to Handle Spice Levels

Indian restaurant spice levels in Hyderabad are generally calibrated for a local palate that is genuinely heat-tolerant. If you are unsure, ask the service staff to indicate which dishes are milder and which are particularly spicy.

The Tangdi Kebab and Butter Chicken Royale are generally on the milder side. The Nalgonda Mutton Fry and many biryani preparations lean towards more assertive heat. The Prawn Masala — a coastal-style coconut-tomato curry — falls somewhere in the middle.

Understanding Price vs. Portion Logic

Indian restaurant pricing in Hyderabad is generally reasonable relative to the portion sizes offered. Mid-range items like Dal Makhani at Rs. 320 or Vegetable Dum Biryani at Rs. 320 represent strong value. Higher-priced items reflect more expensive ingredients and longer cooking times, not simply larger portions.

As a rule, anchor your order around one premium item and fill the rest of the table with mid-range dishes. This usually gives you the best representation of a kitchen’s range.

A Note on Sharing Culture

Indian food is designed to be shared, and ordering with this in mind produces a much better experience than each person selecting their own starter and main in isolation. The food arrives at different times, and the flavours interact across the table in ways that elevate the overall meal.

If you are visiting a serious Indian restaurant for the first time, consider asking the service staff for their current recommendations — particularly for any seasonal additions or chef’s specials not on the printed menu.
