What Is Your Idle Cash Costing You? Nort Capital Does the Math

There is a particular kind of money nobody thinks about very hard. It is not the rent, and it is not the savings you are quietly proud of. It is the few thousand dollars that has been sitting in checking since roughly springtime, doing very little, because dealing with it was never urgent enough to survive contact with an actual weekend.

You probably half know it is there. What you do not have is a figure, and a vague sense that you could be doing better has never once got anybody to open a laptop on a Sunday.

Two minutes and one number

An Atlanta company called Nort Capital has built a free calculator that does exactly one thing. You tell it what you are holding and how much you want to keep within easy reach, and it tells you two things back: how much is sitting above that line, and what a year of it sitting there costs you.

The comparison rate it uses appears right there on the screen, along with where it came from and when it was published. That sounds like a small detail and is not one. A cost calculated against a benchmark you cannot see is a sales pitch. A cost calculated against a rate you can go and verify over lunch is a measurement.

Say it comes back with fourteen thousand above your cushion, costing you a few hundred over a year. Those numbers are illustrative, and it is hardly a disaster. But a few hundred dollars is a real amount of money in most houses, and it had been invisible right up until the moment somebody wrote it down.

Your cushion, your call

Here is the part that makes this different from the various apps that have already tried to sort your money out for you.

Most of them arrive with an opinion. They decide what a sensible emergency fund looks like, measure yours against it, and hand you the difference as though it were a personal failing. Anyone who keeps a fat cushion because one genuinely bad year taught them to will recognize the feeling, and will close the tab accordingly.

Nort Capital simply asks. Whatever number you type is taken as correct, and the company’s own rule is that it never argues with that figure or suggests it is too high or too low. It looks only at what sits above the line you drew. If six months of expenses within arm’s reach is what lets you sleep at night, that is the end of the conversation.

The clock is the point

The second idea underneath all this is time, and it does more work than the money does.

Being told you are holding more than you need is easy enough to absorb and easier still to ignore. Being told it has been there since March lands differently, because suddenly the thing has a length. It is the difference between hearing a tap drip and learning it has been dripping since last winter.

Which is more or less the entire design. Say the amount, say how long, then stop talking. There is no red text on the result, no warning triangle, and nothing anywhere that tells you how you ought to feel about your own bank account. Cash sitting in checking is not a character flaw, and the thing is built so that it never once implies otherwise.

Nobody here is selling you a bank

The calculator will not tell you where to put the money. It names no bank, no account, no provider, and it carries no referral links or paid recommendations of any kind.

That is a decision rather than an oversight, and it costs the company the obvious way to make money from a tool like this. Consider the alternative. Something that tells you what your idle cash is costing while also collecting a fee on wherever you move it next has a quiet stake in that number looking as alarming as possible. Take the fee away and the number has nothing to do but be accurate.

It will not ask who you are either. No account, no email, no cap on how often you use it, and the answer you get is the whole answer rather than a teaser with the interesting half blurred. The company calls itself an educational measurement tool rather than an advisor, a bank or a lender, and nothing on the screen pretends to tell you what to do next.

For the ones who forget

A calculator has one weakness, which is that it only knows what you typed on the day you typed it. Plenty of people will get an honest number, fully intend to act on it, and be sitting in exactly the same position by November.

Nort Capital Watch exists for those people, at $6 a month or $49 a year. It connects to your accounts on a read only basis and keeps watch, noticing when checking creeps back above your buffer, when the rate on a savings account slips, when cash from a sale has been idling. Every quarter it reports whether the figure has actually moved.

Read only means precisely that. No transfers, no payments, no withdrawals, no request for permission to make any. Your bank credentials stay with the connection provider and never reach Nort Capital at all.

The idle cash calculator is free, wants two numbers, and does not ask for your email. Whether the answer is big enough to finally cost you a Sunday afternoon is between you and your bank account, which is exactly where this company seems content to leave it.
