At 10:12 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Kitco quoted silver at $57.64 an ounce on the ask side. Nine months earlier, on January 29, the same metal set an all-time high of $121.67. Anyone who priced silver coins in the spring will now see a number that has roughly halved, and that drop has brought plenty of first-time buyers back to dealer websites.

Silver looks like the easy way into precious metals because a single coin costs about as much as a dinner out. The low price per piece comes with costs gold buyers rarely notice, though: bigger markups, far more weight, and in some countries a tax bill at the checkout.

Here are five things worth checking before you order. Treat the figures as one morning’s snapshot; this is general information, not advice on investing or tax.

1. Silver Is Priced Against Gold, and the Ratio Shows What Your Money Buys

Kitco’s gold chart at the same moment showed gold at $4,126.90 ask, with a gold-silver ratio of 72.0. In plain terms, one ounce of gold costs the same as about 72 ounces of silver.

Gold set its own record of $5,589.38 on January 28, 2026, a day before silver’s peak, so both metals have pulled back. The difference is how far: gold is roughly a quarter below its high, silver more than half. Use the ratio as a measuring tool rather than a signal. It tells you how much metal a budget buys compared with gold, not where either price goes next.

2. Premiums Are Higher on Silver, and There Are Good Reasons

A dealer’s price is spot plus a premium for minting, shipping, insurance and margin. As a gold benchmark, StoneX Bullion put the usual markup on sovereign gold coins at 3% to 10% over spot in an April 2026 guide, and rated bars lower.

Silver usually sits higher in percentage terms. Ainslie Bullion, in a July 2026 explainer, puts it down to bulk: silver takes up far more space than gold for the same money, so it costs more to store, move and insure, and those costs show up in both the buying and the buyback price.

Money Metals Exchange’s Stefan Gleason added in April that coins carry higher premiums than bars because of government minting, legal tender status and steady retail demand, and that coin premiums can jump when demand rises. The useful habit is to divide the dealer’s price by the fine ounces in the item, then subtract live spot. That premium per ounce is the figure to compare.

3. Coins and Bars Do Different Jobs

Bars give you the most silver per dollar. Coins cost more, but government-issued pieces are recognized by dealers almost everywhere, which makes them easier to sell a few at a time. Three one-ounce coins come up again and again:

  • American Eagle. The United States Mint lists it at 99.9% silver, 31.103 g, 40.60 mm and a $1 face value. The Mint sells bullion Eagles only to authorized purchasers, who supply dealers.
  • Maple Leaf. Canada’s national mint gives its 2026 coin as 99.99% pure silver, 31.11 g and 38 mm, with precision radial lines, a micro-engraved maple leaf and Bullion DNA anti-counterfeiting technology.
  • Britannia. The Royal Mint strikes it in 999 fine silver at 38.61 mm, with a £2 denomination.

Large dealers such as APMEX and JM Bullion stock all three, and The Royal Mint sells bullion from its own site. Smaller specialist dealers are another option. Bitgolder’s silver coins and bars, sold by UK-registered METALUTIONS LTD., ran to 103 products on October 21, from fractional pieces to kilo coins, including Perth Mint Kookaburras and Royal Mint Britannias.

4. Silver Takes Up Real Space

Run $5,000 through the October 21 Kitco quotes. In gold, it buys about 1.2 troy ounces, roughly 38 grams. In silver, it buys about 87 ounces, close to 2.7 kilograms, or three and a half tubes of 25 Maple Leafs.

That weight changes the plan. A small home safe that holds a few gold coins fills up quickly with silver, so check its size and weight rating first. Ask your insurer whether your contents policy has a limit for precious metals. If you consider a vault, compare how each provider charges its annual fee. Heavier parcels also cost more to ship and insure, which feeds straight back into that higher premium.

5. Tax and VAT Rules Differ by Country

The UK shows how wide the gap can be. HMRC’s VAT Notice 701/21 says “investment gold is exempt from VAT”, covering bars of at least 995 fineness and qualifying gold coins minted after 1800. It is an exemption, not a zero rate. Silver has no equivalent rule, and StoneX Bullion’s July 2026 UK guide says physical silver bullion is “still subject to the full 20% VAT rate”.

So a UK buyer pays VAT on a silver Britannia but not on a gold one, and many compare the two before deciding. Dealers that sell both make that easy; Bitgolder’s gold range, for example, sits next to its silver and includes Britannia, Maple Leaf and American Eagle coins.

Elsewhere the rules change again. In the United States, sales tax on bullion is set state by state, and rules on reporting sales and taxing gains vary widely, so check what applies where you live before a large purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Is silver cheaper to buy than gold right now?

Per ounce, yes, by a factor of about 72 on Kitco’s October 21 figures. Per dollar of metal, silver usually costs more, because its premiums are higher in percentage terms.

Should my first silver purchase be coins or bars?

Coins from well-known mints can be sold off one or two at a time. Bars give you more metal for the money and suit buyers who expect to hold longer and sell in larger lots.

Should I keep silver at home or in a vault?

A home safe can work for a few coins, as long as it is big enough and your contents cover includes precious metals. Silver gets heavy fast, about 2.7 kilograms for $5,000 at October 21 prices, so buyers with larger amounts often compare a vault’s annual fee with the cost of a bigger safe and extra cover.

The Bottom Line

Silver’s round trip in 2026 has made it look cheap again, but the sticker price is only one number that counts. Check the ratio, work out the premium per ounce, plan for the weight, and find out how your country taxes silver compared with gold. Then stick to a coin or bar other dealers will recognize when you sell, bought from a seller that spells out its insurance, delivery and resale terms before you pay.
