As anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one knows, grief is not a linear process. There will be some days when the weight of losing your friend or family member feels almost overwhelming.

One of the best things you can do is try to keep your loved one’s memory alive. It’s a way of honoring who they were and ensuring the light they brought into the world can keep on shining.

Plant a Tree to Keep Their Legacy Alive

It’s becoming increasingly popular for people to want to give back to the earth once they pass away. You can make that a reality for your loved one by planting a tree for them after they have passed away. When you plant trees in remembrance of a loved one, you do two things. Firstly, you bring something to life as a way of honoring their memory. On top of that, you contribute to a greener world, helping restore forests around the United States. You can even pick which tree and the national forest where you want it to grow.

Cook Their Recipe Regularly

Did your loved one have a personal recipe that they always used to impress your taste buds? Whether it’s a casserole, a spaghetti dish, or the best fish you’ve ever tasted, keep their memory alive by cooking it regularly. Don’t worry too much if they didn’t pass on the exact recipe – you can always just cook the meal they frequently did and adjust it to try and emulate what you remember it tasted like.

Write Down Your Memories Together

As the years pass by, it can be surprising to realize what you have forgotten. When it comes to memories of a loved one, the last thing you want is to forget those precious times. So, one way to honor their memory and keep their legacy alive is by writing down all the most important memories you have in mind. You don’t have to share it (although you can if you want to); it’s more about processing your own feelings and having some writing to look back on years from now.

Keep Their Photos and Keepsakes Around the Home

One of the best ways to remember your loved one is to keep photos and keepsakes of theirs around your home. You could even have a dedicated memory corner – one filled with photos, notebooks, mementos, and anything else that reminds you of them. Or, you can simply have these items in different areas around your space, so you are consistently reminded of who they are.

Make a Donation to a Charity They Cared About

If you want to do some good in the world while honoring exactly who your loved one was, make a donation to a charity that they genuinely cared about. If they were a huge animal enthusiast, for example, you could donate in their name to an animal shelter that looks after and rehomes pets. If their life was impacted by an illness like cancer, you could donate to a specific cancer research charity that helps make the world a better place. There are many possibilities here, and it all depends on your loved one’s values.
