Picking the wrong power box for your rack is not a small mistake. It can knock out your whole server room in one bad second. Power problems cause more data center outages than almost anything else, and the fix starts before you even plug in a single cable.

That fix is a good Power Distribution Unit, and picking the right one is not guesswork. Most data centers run on racks packed with 20, 30, even 40 devices. Each one needs steady power. A PDU does that job quietly in the background, and most people only notice it when it fails.

Why This Choice Matters More Than People Think

Power issues are the single biggest cause of outages in server rooms today. Uptime Institute’s 2025 outage report found power problems remain the top reason data centers go down, even as total outage numbers drop. One bad PDU, one overloaded outlet, and the whole rack can go dark.

Downtime is expensive too. Industry research puts the average cost of an outage at roughly $9,000 per minute across industries, which is over $500,000 an hour. That number jumps even higher for finance and telecom firms. See more on this in the Uptime Institute outage data.

Small wall cabinets with light gear usually do fine with horizontal units.

Here’s a quick breakdown to compare the main types side by side. For a full lineup of options, check this rack PDU selection guide before you commit to a model.

PDU TypeRack Space UsedBest For
Horizontal (1U/2U)1 or 2 rack unitsSmall wall cabinets, light racks, easy front access
Vertical (0U)Zero rack unitsFull, tall racks packed with servers and switches
Basic PDUVariesSimple setups with no need to check power use
Metered/Monitored PDUVariesData centers that track power load and costs

Vertical PDUs can pack in up to 48 outlets on one unit, which is a lot of room to grow into.

Don’t buy the exact number you need today. Racks grow. New switches get added. A second server shows up six months later and now there’s nowhere to plug it in.

Do You Need a Basic PDU or a Metered One?

A basic PDU just distributes power, nothing else. A metered or monitored PDU does more. It shows you exactly how much power is being drawn, outlet by outlet.

For data centers billing clients by power usage, metering isn’t optional at all. It’s the whole business model.

Add up the total power draw of every device in your rack before buying anything. This number has to sit comfortably under your PDU’s rated capacity, never right at the edge of it.

Quick Checklist Before You Buy

  • Measure your rack space and pick horizontal or vertical based on how full it already is
  • Count every device, then add 25 percent more outlets for future growth
  • Decide if you need to track power use, then choose basic or metered
  • Add up total wattage and match it against the PDU’s rated load
  • Check your outlet type matches your region’s plug standard before ordering
  • Confirm single-phase or three-phase power based on your total rack draw
