Pregnancy changes a lot of things, including the way you get dressed every morning. A top that felt loose a few months ago may suddenly feel tight, and your favourite jeans may stay in the cupboard for a while. It can be tempting to buy many new clothes, but most women do not really need a completely new wardrobe for nine months.

A better idea is to choose clothes that can work during pregnancy and still be useful after your baby arrives. When you shop with that in mind, you can get more wear from the clothes you buy and avoid filling your wardrobe with pieces you may not use later.

Start With Clothes That Can Grow With You

Your body changes quite a lot during pregnancy. Your bump gets bigger, your waist changes and your breast size may also increase. So, clothes that have some stretch or extra room can be much more comfortable.

Loose dresses, stretchy tops and relaxed trousers are good places to start. You do not have to buy everything oversized. Look for clothes that give you a little room without making you feel like you are wearing something much bigger than your actual size.

A simple dress can be especially useful. You can wear it with a growing bump and continue wearing it after delivery when you want something easy and comfortable.

Think About Life After the Baby Arrives

It is easy to shop only for the pregnancy stage because that is what you are thinking about at the time. But the first few months after having a baby can be just as important when planning your wardrobe.

You may spend more time at home, go out for short walks, visit family or take your baby with you when you run errands. You will probably want clothes that are easy to wear and do not need too much effort.

Feeding is another thing to think about. If you plan to breastfeed, having a few nursing friendly tops or dresses can be useful. You do not need every item in your wardrobe to be made for nursing. Just keep a few practical options that make feeding easier when you are outside or have guests at home.

Choose the Right Bra Too

Your regular bras may be one of the first things that start feeling uncomfortable during pregnancy. As your body changes, the band can feel tighter and your usual cups may not give you enough room.

A maternity bra can be a useful option during pregnancy because it is designed with a changing body in mind. Comfort should be your first check. The straps should not dig into your shoulders, the band should not feel painfully tight and your breasts should sit comfortably inside the cups.

Later, a nursing bra can become one of the most useful pieces in your wardrobe. Easy access for feeding means you do not have to completely remove your bra every time you breastfeed.

Lovemère has a range of maternity and nursing bras in different styles, so mothers can choose based on what feels comfortable for their own routine. Having a few bras to rotate between can also be helpful, especially during the early days when laundry seems to happen very often.

Look for Tops You Can Wear Later

When buying maternity tops, try not to focus only on how they look with a bump. Think about how they will look once your baby is born too.

A loose shirt, soft T shirt or simple top can work during pregnancy and after delivery. You can wear it with maternity trousers now and regular trousers later. Small things like this can save you from buying another complete set of clothes after pregnancy.

If you are breastfeeding, tops with easy access can be even more useful. They can make feeding less complicated when you are away from home.

The same applies to dresses. A comfortable dress can become a regular part of your wardrobe after pregnancy if it has a simple shape and does not depend completely on the bump for its fit.

Keep Your Everyday Life in Mind

There is no single maternity wardrobe that works for every woman. Your clothes should fit the way you actually spend your day.

If you work in an office, you may need a few comfortable dresses, trousers and tops that can be mixed together. If you work from home, you may care more about soft fabrics and easy fits. Someone who travels often may want clothes that can be worn in different ways.

Think about the clothes you already wear the most. If you always reach for a certain type of dress or top, look for maternity versions with a similar feel. There is no need to completely change your personal style just because you are pregnant.

Give Some Thought to Your Nursing Bra

A nursing bra is worth thinking about before the baby arrives. You do not necessarily need to buy several at once, but having one or two comfortable options ready can make the change into breastfeeding a little easier.

Look for a bra that feels supportive but does not squeeze your body. Easy nursing clips can be useful because you can open the cup with one hand while holding your baby with the other.

If you expect to pump as well as breastfeed, you may also want to consider a pumping bra. The right choice depends on your routine and how often you plan to pump.

The main thing is not to buy a bra just because it is labelled as a nursing or maternity bra. Check how it feels on your body. A good fit will always be more useful than a long list of features.

You Do Not Need to Buy Everything

It is very easy to get carried away when shopping for pregnancy clothes. There are so many things available that you may feel you need a new wardrobe from top to bottom.

You probably do not.

Start with the clothes you are struggling to wear now. Maybe your trousers no longer feel comfortable, or your tops are getting tight around your chest. Replace those pieces first. Then add other items only when you actually need them.

A few good dresses, comfortable tops, bottoms that give you enough room, and a supportive maternity bra can take you quite far.

After your baby arrives, you may also find yourself wearing some maternity clothes simply because they are comfortable. There is nothing wrong with that. Your wardrobe does not have to change overnight just because pregnancy is over.

The best maternity wardrobe is one that works with you rather than against you. Choose pieces that feel good during pregnancy, make daily life easier after your baby arrives and still feel like your own clothes along the way.
