Grok 4.6 has become a very real search term before it has become a real product page. The most useful fact for a developer is also the least exciting: xAI’s release notes and documentation did not list Grok 4.6 when checked on July 30.

That does not make the rumor uninteresting. It changes the correct genre from an evaluation to a preview: separate a public statement from a product specification, and separate both from a benchmark.

What is missing

There is no official Grok 4.6 documentation, model card, price, context-window specification, benchmark report, or xAI-confirmed launch date. The gateway model list likewise contained Grok 4.3 and Grok 4.5, not Grok 4.6. Any article that presents a 4.6 score, context limit, or price today is filling in a blank.

This is not a technicality. A model name can hide changes to serving, tool support, output limits, safety settings, or route availability. Those details are often what determine whether a new model is usable in a production workflow.

What the timeline posts actually say

The public timeline moved quickly. A July 25 post said ‘Grok 4.6 in 2 weeks and Grok 4.7 in 4 weeks.’ A July 28 post said Grok 4.6 would arrive ‘around August 7,’ described it as a 1.5T model with improved supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning, and placed a 2.1T Grok 4.7 a few weeks later.

Those are statements on X, not xAI documentation. The date should therefore be written as a reported target, not a release promise. The parameter figure should be attributed to the dated post, not treated as a settled model specification.

Why Grok 4.5 is the useful baseline

Grok 4.5 is the product that can actually be inspected. Artificial Analysis listed its published price at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, with a 500K context limit independently observed from a response header on the tested route. Its positioning is value and token efficiency, not an established claim to headline-leaderboard supremacy.

That baseline also gives 4.6 a concrete question to answer. If the reported change is mostly post-training, the interesting launch-day checks are not imaginary benchmark wins. They are whether the behavior, reliability, latency, and billing path meaningfully change on the route people can call.

What we will test when it appears

A preview can be useful when it names the test before the result exists. The prepared Rewind Runner harness can generate a browser game and verify one specific rewind mechanic with repeatable inputs. It can record route-level latency, returned usage, browser errors, and a behavioral pass or fail.

That will still be a case study, not a universal ranking. But it is a much better launch-day artifact than guessing a score from a rumor thread.
