Beyond timing, caffeine use, sleep hygiene, hydration, and light physical activity all interact with medication-related tiredness. It is worth keeping a simple log of energy levels at different times of day for a week or two. That data gives your prescriber something concrete to work with rather than a general complaint of feeling tired.

Sexual Side Effects: Why They Happen and What Can Be Done

Sexual dysfunction is one of the most common reasons people quietly stop taking antidepressants. Studies estimate that 30 to 40 percent of people on SSRIs experience some form of sexual side effect, including reduced libido, delayed orgasm, or anorgasmia. That figure may be an undercount because many patients do not bring it up with their doctors.

Serotonin and dopamine have opposing roles in sexual function. Serotonin tends to inhibit sexual response, while dopamine facilitates it. SSRIs, by elevating serotonin activity, tip the balance in a direction that dampens desire and physical response. Nausea and Gastrointestinal Discomfort

Taking the medication with food slows absorption slightly, which tends to reduce the peak concentration of the drug in the bloodstream and smooths out gastrointestinal effects. This is more of a concern in older adults, but anyone experiencing persistent or unusual GI symptoms should not simply wait it out.

When Side Effects Are a Signal to Reassess

Not every side effect is something to manage through. Some are signals that the current medication is not the right fit for a particular person’s biology. If side effects are severe, last beyond the expected adjustment window, significantly impair daily functioning, or are accompanied by new symptoms like increased anxiety, emotional blunting, or thoughts of self-harm, the prescriber needs to know immediately.

There are dozens of antidepressants available across multiple classes. What does not work well for one person may work well for another. The prescribing process involves a degree of informed trial, but that process should always be supervised. Pharmacogenomic testing, which looks at how a person’s genes affect drug metabolism, is increasingly available and can help narrow down medication choices before the first prescription is written.
