Background checks can be used for many reasons, most commonly during hiring, tenant screening, or loan application reviews. They may pull from a wide range of data sources and include different types of information depending on the purpose of the check. Understanding CRA background screening, who uses it, and how to request one properly can help organizations stay aligned with privacy and compliance requirements.

Understanding CRA Background Checks

A CRA background check is a type of screening that’s done by a Consumer Reporting Agency (CRA). These agencies collect and verify information about individuals and can provide reports to not only potential employers, but also landlords, lenders, licensing agencies, and other organizations that might need the information to make an informed decision. A CRA background screening might include many different checks depending on the reason it’s being done, but often includes the following:

  • Criminal history searches
  • Employment verification
  • Education verification
  • Driving record checks
  • Credit reports (when relevant)
  • Professional license verification
  • Identify confirmation

The goal of any CRA background check is to provide the information an organization needs to make important decisions while still protecting the privacy of the applicant.

Common Uses for CRA Background Checks

There are many different reasons you might need to order a background check. One of the most common is employers who want to screen job applicants. Many businesses order background checks before hiring employees, especially for positions that have access to sensitive information, financial responsibilities, or contact with vulnerable populations.

Another large group that uses background checks is landlords. These checks can be used to evaluate rental applicants for any potential concerns while verifying identity and reviewing rental history. Volunteer organizations might also use background checks to ensure that anyone working within the organization is trustworthy, even if they’re not a legal employee.

How to Properly Request a Background Check

If you fall into any of the above categories and need to order a background check, you will want to take the appropriate steps. First, have a thorough understanding of what information you need to make an informed decision. Then partner with a reputable CRA that can provide the screening you need. After partnering, you must get written permission from the person that you’re screening. The consent form needs to be separate from other paperwork so that it’s clear what the person is signing. After receiving the report, you will need to provide proper disclosures if you reject an applicant based on the report’s information.

Anyone requesting CRA background screening must adhere to state and federal regulations ordering background checks. This is why it’s so important to partner with an established, trustworthy service provider.
